Every month, the Department of Family and Community Services releases its profile of labour market and related payments for the previous month. This coincides with the release of the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) National Unemployment figure for the same period.
The figures contained in this publication differ from the unemployment figures produced by the ABS. The ABS figures, for example, include many jobseekers who do not receive a benefit.
The publication primarily covers jobseekers receiving Newstart Allowance and Youth Allowance (other) – that is, people who received a payment and are required to search for work.
The number of people receiving Mature Age Allowance, Partner Allowance, Widow Allowance and Youth Allowance as full-time students are also included in the publication.
The figures are broken down by State or Territory and by Centrelink office.
This month, the total number of jobseekers receiving either Newstart Allowance or Youth Allowance (other) was 434,370 a decrease of 15,244 since August 2003.
The number of long-term jobseekers is 256,054. The number of long-term jobseekers decreased 7,161 since August 2003. The number of short-term jobseekers decreased by 8,083 since August 2003 and the total number is 178,316. The Monthly Profile contains extensive explanatory notes starting at page 24.
