FAA CANNOT be paid unless YA, Austudy or PES was received at the time of the journey. Consequently, if a student is serving a waiting period or non-payment period, they would not be RECEIVING the payment and FAA would not be payable. If a person incurs a travel cost during a non-payment or waiting period they would not be able to be reimbursed for that cost as they did not qualify for FAA at the time the cost was incurred.
FAA is normally paid as a reimbursement of costs incurred by the student, which is claimed after the journey has been completed.
Payment may be made in advance by pre-booking a fare for an eligible student. Payment is not made directly to the student, but is paid to the commercial operator. Pre-booked FAA will usually be for airfares.
A pre-booked fare CANNOT be paid for a student unless they are currently in receipt of YA, Austudy or PES.
Another person may claim FAA on behalf of a qualified student should that student die after undertaking the journey. FAA must be claimed by another person within 26 weeks after the death or such further period allowed by the Secretary depending on the special circumstances of the case.
