National Youth Affairs Research Scheme (NYARS)
Established in 1985, the National Youth Affairs Research Scheme (NYARS) is a co-operative funding program between the Australian, State and Territory Governments. It facilitates nationally based research into factors affecting young people. NYARS research findings assist with the formulation and assessment of policy development and implementation by Australian, State and Territory Ministers and Departments responsible for youth affairs.
NYARS operates under the auspices of the Ministerial Council on Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs (MCEETYA). MCEETYA chooses the topics for the annual NYARS research program from a short-list developed collaboratively by jurisdictions.
The Australian Government (through the Australian Government Department of Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs) provides half the annual NYARS funding of $240,000, with the States and Territories contributing the rest on a pro rata basis determined by their youth populations.
