From the introduction (1996): 'Australia has had persistently high youth unemployment over the past 15 years. In August 1995, there were 271,300 unemployed young people in Australia. It is conservatively estimated that approximately 55,000 of these had been unemployed for more than a year.'The report describes the social and economic context of youth unemployment, the impact on families and young people, policy and program responses, the costs of youth unemployment, and future directions. It also contains an extensive bibliography as well as valuable tables of figures.
