Child Disability Assistance Payment

Purpose of payment

The Child Disability Assistance Payment is a $1000 annual payment made for a child with disability under 16 years who attracts a payment of Carer Allowance for their carer. The payment can be used to assist families purchase support, aids, therapies, or respite that they require for their child with disability. Importantly, the payment will help carers to purchase the form of assistance that best suits the needs of the family.

Carer Allowance is a supplementary payment to people who provide daily care and attention in a private home to a person with disability or severe medical conditions. Carer Allowance (child) is paid to a carer of a child under 16 years with a disability.

Qualifications

A carer is qualified for a Child Disability Assistance Payment if they receive an instalment of Carer Allowance for their child/children in respect of a period that included 1 July.

Other information

The payment will be made by Centrelink to the carer for each child with disability for whom they are receiving payment of Carer Allowance (child). The payment will be made annually in July.

The Child Disability Assistance Payment is not subject to income tax, nor does it count as income for social security or family assistance purposes.

Where a carer receives a portion of Carer Allowance for their child/children, in respect of a period that included 1 July, due to shared care arrangements, they will receive a portion of Child Disability Assistance Payment that reflects these arrangements.

Carer Allowance customers whose children entitle them to receive a Health Care Card only are not entitled to receive Child Disability Assistance Payment.
