Longitudinal Data Initiatives
Longitudinal data initiatives gather information by following the same individual or group over time. Many social policy measures depend on understanding the extent and dynamic nature of many variables (such as income, employment and family relationships) over time. Longitudinal data aid the investigation of behavioural determinants and casual factors, and allow researchers to better evaluate the effects of different types of policy interventions over time. Longitudinal data are especially valuable in informing policy initiatives that focus on prevention and early intervention.
- Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia Survey - a major longitudinal study of Australian households which will collect data focusing on income, labour market and family dynamics.
- Growing up in Australia - The Longitudinal Survey of Australian Children (LSAC) - part of the Stronger Families an Communities Strategy, this study will be an invaluable tool in developing government policy on early childhood and effective early intervention and prevention strategies in health, education, child care and family support.
- Footprints in Time - The Longitudinal Study of Indigenous Children (LSIC) - this study aims to improve the understanding of, and policy response to, the diverse circumstances faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, their families and communities.
