Some issues in home ownership

Policy Research Paper 17 / William Mudd, Habtemariam Tesfaghiorghis and J Rob Bray. October 2001

The analysis of home ownership rates from ABS statistics from 1981 to 1996 suggest that the decline in home ownership could reflect a trend towards deferring ownership, but not a reduction in the lifetime achievement of owning a home.

More recent data shows that this trend has not continued since 1996. Incentives, such as the First Home Owner Grant, combined with lower interest rates appear to have contributed to improving affordability, and possibly increasing the rate of home ownership.
